It was probably produced in order to serve as a shining
example of their activities which should be a model to the descendants.
The bravery and heroic acts of various generals are depicted in a
vivid and realistic manner. The contents are composed of the eight
scenes of: 'Expanded Territory and Erected a Monument'; 'Got Shot
at by an Arrow in the middle of a Banquet'; 'Composed a Poem during
Overnight Battle'; 'Defeated the Enemy with a Trick'; 'Climbed a Mountain
and Composed a Poem'; 'Defeated the Enemy with One Arrow'; 'Defended
a Wooden Fence against Barbarian'; and 'Chong Mun-bu Defeated Japanese
Army'. The coloring is vivid and brilliant, and has been applied rather
thickly. Avoiding the simple composition in which the main character
is placed at the center of the screen, the story has been pushed to
the right-hand side of the screen as in 'Climbed a Mountain and Composed
a Poem', or it has adopted a composition in which the main scene was
drawn at one side of the screen as in 'Expanded Territory and Erected
a Monument' or 'Composed a Poem during Overnight Battle'. Paintings
have mainly adopted a distinct three-stage composition of the scenery
in the foreground, the middle and the distant view. The motions of
the people or the horses do not follow a set pattern and have been
well represented to suit the roles and positions of each, and even
the smallest details such as the fingers and the horseshoes have been
depicted minutely in a very thin stroke. Although the presentation
of the mountains and trees are deeply influenced by the landscape
painting of the An Kyon style such as black and white contrast, irregular
outlines, protruding hills with the pine trees and a trace of the
short lines and dots technique, the Chol style (ïº÷ï) has been appropriately
mixed in, for instance with the handling of the distant mountains
or trees. Also, the method of depicting a cow in 'Defended a Wooden
Fence against Barbarian' reflects the typical technique of the mid-Choson
period in the handling of the dotted line on the backbone and light
coloring of the cow's legs. In terms of style, the presentation of
a simple, half moon-shaped marquee with blue folds; the emphasis on
the ridge of the roof and the edge of the roof which have been colored
rather darker than the surface of the roof; the technique used on
the willow trees; and the formalistic expression of the mountains
and trees in the An Kyon style indicate well the method of presentation
in paintings of events from the late-seventeenth century to the early-eighteenth
century. |

'Expanded Territory and Erected a Monument' depicts
the historical event in which State Councillor (øÁíñÞÀ) Yun Kwan
(ëÅζ: ?-1111) and Fourth Minister of Office of Ministers-without-Portfolio
(ò±õÒÚËêÂÞÀ) O Yon-ch'ong (çïæÅõÁ: 1055-1116) were appointed as Chief
Commander (ú¼ç½ÓÞêªÞÔ) and Commander (ÜùêªÞÔ) each in 1107 (Year 2 of
King Yejong's reign) and subsequently defeated the Jurchen with
an army of seventeen thousand and extended the Koryo border.
They built six walled fortresses in Hamju, Pokju, Ungju, Yongju,
Kilju, and Konghomjin, then erected a monument with four letters
of 'Koryojigyong' (ÍÔÕòñýÌÑ; the boundary of Koryo) at Sonch'unryong,
thereby marking out the boundary. |
