11The Korea University Museum opened in 1934, twenty-nine years after the college was established in 1905, as the first university museum in Korea. The Museum initially housed folk art of the Chos n dynasty, but steadily expanded its holdings to include paintings, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and decorative arts from prehistoric to modern times, forming one of the most comprehensive university art collections in the nation.

1Korea University Museum's collection of traditional Korean painting is especially noted for its scope and quality. On many occasions paintings from it have been selected for display in important exhibitions both at home and abroad. This is the first time in which the best paintings from the collection, totaling about sixty titles and consituting some one hundred and twenty works related to the theme of scholar painting of the Chos n period, have been brought together for public exhibition.

1The Korea University Museum and the Korean Studies Institute of Korea University would like to extend their deep appreciation to the Hyundai Group, the Korean-American cultural community, and the participating American museums for their encouragement and support in planning and making this exhibition tour possible.
